Gabrielle Pompey believes the most powerful tool a child can have is the feeling of being understood. Based in New Jersey, Gabrielle is a mother and an advocate for social-emotional growth who turned a pivotal family moment into The Adventures of EJ and Blu.

Her stories blend over two decades of professional experience in behavioral and educational support with the honest, beautiful reality of motherhood. Where EJ and Blu Came From
For nine years, it was just the two of us. As an only child, EJ has always been my world, but I started to see the gaps that even a mother’s love could not quite fill. He was often bored and looking for a playmate, and I began to notice those "big feelings" that can be so hard for a child to navigate alone. I knew he needed an anchor—a steady and loyal companion who could be there in the moments I could not.
The connection was instant. We went to see a litter of puppies in a coworker’s backyard, and while the rest of the puppies were a whirlwind of energy, the smallest one did something I will never forget. He walked straight over to EJ and sat right against his shoe, pressed close and perfectly calm. It was love at first sight.
We named him Blu—after EJ’s favorite color, with a little creative "e-less" flair—and since that day, our home has not been the same. Blu has become one of EJ’s greatest teachers. Our days are filled with the beautiful contrast of life with a puppy: the "loud" moments of chasing each other through the house, playing tug with favorite squirrel toys, and high-energy games of fetch—balanced by the quiet, peaceful moments of the two of them curled up on the sofa watching TV or sleeping side-by-side at night.
Blu is EJ’s calm. He brought an extra layer of love into our family that I did not know we were missing. I created The Adventures of EJ and Blu because I wanted to bottle that feeling—the instant, wordless connection that tells a child, "you are seen, you are safe, and you are never alone."
